How to remove a foreign body from the mouth?

In the mouth of dogs and cats it is possible to find sharp foreign bodies sticking to the mucosa or in the palate or strings or pieces of elastic rolled around the base of the tongue. In dogs it is more frequent to find bone chips or pieces of wood from the woods thrown for fun by the owners.
Carefully check the mouth starting with the lips and lip vestibule. Then, by opening the oral cavity, exam it carefully, also looking under the tongue. Once the foreign body identified, remove it only if the operation is possible without risking further damage to the animal’s mouth. Once the operation is completed, check the wound, and if its size seems significant, consult your veterinarian.
